Building Training
Capability from Within
Great training doesn't always come from hiring externally. Sometimes, the strongest trainers are already part of the team. This project focused on helping experienced employees step into training roles with the confidence, structure, and tools to support others.
Discover how internal experts and team leaders were supported in becoming confident facilitators and trainers. This project highlights a practical approach to developing training capability from within and creating learning cultures that can sustain growth over time.-
The team did not lack expertise. It had experienced employees who understood the work, the processes, and the realities of the operation. The challenge was converting that expertise into an effective training capability.
Training others requires a different skill set from performing the work itself. Effective trainers must understand how people learn, communicate clearly, ask purposeful questions, plan instruction, manage learning environments, select appropriate methodologies, and evaluate whether learning has occurred.
The project therefore focused on a practical business question: how can an organization develop its internal experts into capable trainers who can transfer knowledge consistently and sustainably?

Wave’s Senior ID and the operations partner designed a progressive learning journey rather than a one-time class. The experience combined independent learning with guided reflection and application, allowing participants to build knowledge over time and connect it to the work they already knew.

The Role of Debrief Sessions
The self-paced courses established a shared foundation, but the debrief sessions created the bridge between theory and application. Participants could discuss the concepts, reflect on their own training style, explore real-world scenarios, and identify how new techniques could be used in their operational environment.
This approach supported the program expectations for active engagement, application of concepts, reflection and feedback, and readiness to design and deliver training with aligned objectives and assessments.

The blended trainer-development experience combined eight self-paced eLearning courses with facilitated debrief sessions. Participants developed skills across the training lifecycle and then connected those concepts to real situations within their operational environment.
The impact extended beyond training completion. The operations leader reported stronger internal training capability, greater consistency in onboarding and ongoing training, reduced reliance on external training support, and clearer opportunities for employee development. Two participants later advanced into higher-level roles and now independently deliver training for their team.
The outcome: learning that did not just develop individual skills - it created sustainable capability within the operation.
“The program not only strengthened individual facilitation skills but also helped establish a culture of knowledge-sharing, internal development, and continuous improvement.”
